Waterloo Sports Medicine Centre
WSM is comprised of two multi-disciplinary facilities,WSM University Square Plaza, andWSM at RIM Park, that utilize a variety of health services to manage sports and activity-related injuries. Our unique clinical setting allows our sports medicine professionals to collaborate and ultimately provide patients with the best treatment for their sport and activity injuries.
1986 – WSM, headed by Dr. Forest Caldwell, opened its doors with the goal of providing quality sports medicine services to people of all ages and abilities, not just the elite and competitive athletes. Dr. Caldwell recognized the need to expand sports medicine services beyond the varsity level to the thousands of other athletes in the growing community of Kitchener-Waterloo. Our first clinic was a 2,700 square foot facility located in the same mall as our present location, University Square Plaza at the corner of University Avenue and Weber Street in Waterloo.
1996 – Dr. Robert Lee joined the medical staff along with several new physiotherapists, including Randall Helm, the now-owner of the physiotherapy side of WSM, and transformed the centre, expanding the clinic, as well as increasing the number of therapist and services WSM provided for Waterloo Region.
1999- WSM underwent a major expansion from 3,500 sq ft to 8,900 sq ft.
2001 – WSM opened WSM at RIM Park, a second location in Manulife Financial Sportsplex, part of Waterloo’s state of the art RIM Park sports and recreational facility.
2009 – In July, the University Square Plaza location expanded again with new facilities for Massage therapy and a renovation of the existing space.
2010 - In late fall, WSM at RIM Park took over a neigbouring space to increase treatment area by 50%
2012 - Physio is expanding again as we swell into the space next door.
Today, WSM is one of the largest and most comprehensive sports medicine centres in Canada. Our two facilities have a combined 12, 500 sq. ft. of space. Our practice includes 10 Registered Massage Therapists, 14 Physiotherapists, 3 Sports Medicine Physicians, 1 Physiatrist, 1 Pedorthist, 1 Occupational Therapist who does hand splinting, 1 Naturopathic Doctor, 13 support staff and numerous kinesiology students/volunteers.
Since 1986, over 76,000 athletes and active individuals have relied on the experience and expertise of the various clinicians at WSM who work together as a team.
