Muay Thai, Kick Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling

Andrea Watson 1I’ve been an athlete all of my life. I grew up playing soccer and later switched to rugby. At 15 years old, I started boxing at the Waterloo Boxing Club. After three years of boxing, several amateur boxing fights and winning the 2009 Ringside World Amateur Boxing Tournament, the largest boxing tournament in the world, I decided I wanted to get into more combat sports. I began training in Muay Thai at the MAS Academy of Martial Arts in Cambridge. My first fight outside of boxing was at the 2010 Canadian National Championships. I fought and dominated my opponent, one of Canada’s top kickboxers at the time; the fight was stopped four times to have her coach clean her up and once to have the doctor look at her. I went on to fight in both kickboxing and Thai boxing for the rest of the year, in three different weight classes.

At the 2011 Canadian National Championships I was again forced to fight in kickboxing, after no opponents were willing to face me in the Thai boxing division. I dominated my opponent from P.E.I. and won the 2011 Nationals in both the Thai Boxing (walkover) and kickboxing divisions.

Andrea Watson 2Two days after the 2011 Nationals I left with Team Canada for Thailand to fight for the 2011 World Muay Thai Federation (WMF) World Championship Title. We stayed at the world renowned Kaewsamrit Gym in Bangkok, Thailand to prepare for the fights. I conquered the countries of Vietnam, Ukraine, and France at the worlds and became the 2011 WMF World Amateur Muay Thai Champion, the 2011 WMF World Pro-Am Muay Thai Champion and the 2011 Asian Cup Champion. I won the WMF worlds in both divisions and at 19 years old.

I returned from Thailand looking to further my training and compete in more combat sports. I joined the Alliance Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) school in Waterloo, with Professor Dragan Konjevic as my coach. In September of 2011, I began my first Wrestling season with the Guelph Wrestling Club. I debuted in the sport of wrestling and in the sport of BJJ in late 2011.

I now compete in Muay Thai, Kickboxing, BJJ, and Wrestling, and one day I would like to compete in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts.
