Gymnastics

Crystal GilmoreI have been in sports for as long as I can remember, beginning with figure skating. Over the years I participated in a long list of activities, but gymnastics is the sport I really love. I started when I was five years old, began competing at nine and decided I wanted to specialize when I was 10. I also realized at a young age that I wanted to compete at the Olympic games. I trained very hard for years at the same time balancing the pressures of school. I often spent more than 30 hours a week training with the Cambridge Kips, in hopes that I would someday make my Olympic dream come true. I was very fortunate to be able to represent Canada at the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia, where I helped our team achieve it best ranking – ninth place. Competing at such a prestigious event was very exhilarating, and an experience that will last a lifetime. However, my dream is still alive. While on a gymnastics scholarship at the University of Utah I sustained a back injury that would keep me from participating in gymnastics. I turned to coaching to allow my body to recover. While watching the 2004 Olympic trials I realized that I was still capable of contending with the best in Canada and began my comeback. Over the past year I was able to earn a spot again on the National Team. I attribute this success to hard work and above all, my team of dedicated coaches. I could not have seen such success without the encouragement of friends and family, and especially my husband, who is also a gymnast. The services provided by WSM have also been extremely helpful. Whenever I was injured I would drop in to see the doctors and they were always successful in getting me back on track as quickly as possible. It was while preparing for the 2000 Olympic games I dislocated my elbow. But with the help of the health professionals at WSM, I was able to get back in shape so that I was able to compete and make my dream come true.
