Evelyn McGowan

Dance

Evelyn McGowanI have been a Highland dancer for 11 years, since the tender age of six. Over these years I have been a highly competitive Highland dancer, travelling throughout Canada, the US, and Scotland to compete.

When not participating in my own classes, I volunteer as an assistant dance teacher to my own teachers at the Ceilidh Highland Dancers. Spending more than 10 hours at dance class has made the dance studio my second home, not unlike Waterloo Sports Medicine. In 1999 and 2001, I was Canadian Highland Dance Champion in my age group. Since then I have consistently ranked in the top 10 in the Ontario and North American Championships, this year placing fifth in my age group in the National Competition at the Scotdance Canada Championship Series in Calgary, Alberta. In 2002, I received a sixth place finish at the World Highland Dance Championships in Dunoon, Scotland. The highlight of my career was definitely competing at the World Championships in 2002. The energy and excitement from the dancers and the community of Dunoon for the Worlds is so intense and so empowering, it uplifted my spirit and amplified my love for dance.

Without Waterloo Sports Medicine, I would have nothing to do between dance classes! I also probably wouldn’t be dancing …or even walking for that matter. The doctors and physiotherapists have been so valuable in my dancing career, without them I couldn’t have ever achieved what I have.
