When should I come to WSM?
Our goal is to keep physically active people active. If your injury is preventing you from doing the activities you enjoy, then we want to see you!
Many people believe that because we are a sports medicine clinic, we treat only professional athletes. Elite athletes only make up a small percentage of our patients. The majority of our patients are recreational participants in pursuit of fun, health and fitness.
WSM treats athletes of all ages ranging from young children to senior citizens and who participate in a variety of activities.
WSM treats any injury that inhibits your ability to participate in the sport or activity of your choice. We also specialize in the treatment of medical problems associated with sport and exercise (i.e., exercise-induced asthma, sports nutritional problems, athlete fatigue, etc.). We do not treat WSIB or work-related injuries.
If an injury produces significant swelling or discoloration, creates prolonged tingling or numbness, creates a prolonged loss of function, or recovers for daily living activities but continues to limit the ability to participate in sport/activity, it is best to consult with a sports medicine physician.
RICE is the best initial treatment for mild to moderate sports injuries. If your injury does not respond to RICE within 1 to 2 days (i.e., pain and swelling persist), your injury requires medical attention.
Other factors that indicate a visit to WSM is in order are:
• Your injury or problem is affecting your ability to participate in the sport or activity
• You are unsure about how to manage the problem or injury.
Keep in mind that it is easier to treat an injury in the early stages rather than waiting until the injury is chronic and may have progressed to something more serious than initially encountered.
